MSD Animal Health Expands Vaccine Production and Manufacturing Presence Construction Phase Begins on New Facility in Boxmeer

MSD Animal Health, one of the world leaders in animal health vaccines, has begun the construction phase of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Boxmeer, for sterile filling and freeze drying of vaccines.

BOXMEER, The Netherlands, September 17, 2018 – MSD Animal Health, a division of Merck & Co., Inc., Kenilworth, N.J., USA, one of the world leaders in animal health vaccines, has begun the construction phase of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Boxmeer, for sterile filling and freeze drying of vaccines. Boxmeer is one of the company’s centers for the development and production of veterinary vaccines. The location is part of a manufacturing network in The Netherlands, including existing production and research facilities in Boxmeer and De Bilt that supports the company’s global leadership position in the animal health vaccine market.

“We are excited about the opportunity to continue to bring new advanced technology to our facility and expand our footprint in the region,” said Philip Grose, Site Director, MSD Animal Health, The Netherlands. “We are focused on delivering innovative vaccines to advance animal health and meet customer needs, and this investment reflects our commitment.”

Vaccines play an important role in protecting animal and public health. Timely and effective vaccination reduces the incidence and severity of disease, enabling efficient production of food animals. Vaccines also have had a significant impact on the health of pets, preventing serious illnesses and helping them live longer and healthier lives.

The new manufacturing facility, which is expected to be operational in several years, will include production capacity for sterile filling and freeze drying of vaccines and will provide MSD Animal Health with additional manufacturing resources to meet the growing demand. Freeze-dried vaccines are not only more sustainable; they are also easy to administer.

“We are committed to expanding manufacturing capabilities and capacity to meet the growing demand for our products,” said Joseph Morrissey, Senior Vice President, Animal Health Manufacturing, MSD Animal Health. “Our investment in both the new biological facility in Krems, Austria and Boxmeer, The Netherlands positions our company for strong long-term growth.”

MSD Animal Health also continues to invest in expanding existing manufacturing facilities on the site. The location in the Netherlands currently employs 1,500 employees, mainly in research and development and manufacturing roles.

The new facility in Krems is under renovation and should be ready for production in the coming years.
